Workshop | Museum Het Schip X Ikuya Sagara: building a thatched artwork

Have you always wanted to work on a life-sized work of art? This is your chance! During this workshop, you will build an impressive dome made of thatch with guidance from Japanese thatching artist Ikuya Sagara and Yuko Taage. This unique workshop takes place exclusively this weekend and spots are limited, so be quick!

From September 15 through October 22, the exhibition '1923: Horiguchi meets the Amsterdam School' is on show at Museum Het Schip. Just like the Japanese architect Horiguchi, allow yourself to be inspired by the wonderful Amsterdam School (and the use of thatchwork in particular), roll up your sleeves and get to work in the courtyard of iconic worker's palace Het Schip!*

About Ikuya Sagara & Yuko Taage
Ikuya Sagara (1980) will come all the way from Japan to Museum Het Schip to offer this workshop. Sagara is the founder of 'Kusakanmuri', an association of professionals in the field of thatching, in addition to being a thatching artist. His work is highly regarded at home and abroad: Ikuya Sagara has won many awards and has collaborated - not in the last place - on the pavilion of world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, which will be on display at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka. During this workshop, he will work with Yuko Taage, a researcher and expert on thatching.

This workshop takes about 2.5 hours and is suitable for all ages. Therefore, feel free to bring your (borrowed, next-door or god) child! The workshop takes place outside. In case of bad weather, wearing a raincoat is advised. Please note that a ticket to the exhibition is not included with this ticket. You can add a ticket for the museum to your order separately.
